Learn the feedback before everyday use

Use this overview to become familiar with SmartCane. The final product manual supplied with your device takes priority.

Before each trip

  1. Check the shaft, joints, handle and cane tip for damage or looseness.
  2. Make sure the sensor windows are clean, dry and unobstructed.
  3. Confirm adequate battery charge and test the tactile and audio status cues.
  4. Continue using established white-cane techniques and personal judgement.
SmartCane control and feedback area

1. Charge

Charge with the supplied cable in a dry location. Close the protective charging cover before use.

2. Practise

Learn each vibration and status cue in a controlled, familiar environment before relying on the electronic features outdoors.

3. Use

Hold and sweep the cane according to your mobility training. Treat sensor feedback as supplementary information.

Sensor and feedback basics

Forward sensors are designed to detect some obstacles ahead, while the protected downward sensor is intended to add awareness of certain changes in terrain. Tactile zones indicate a general direction; conditions, materials and sensor positioning can affect detection.

Cleaning and storage

  • Wipe the handle and sensor windows with a soft, lightly damp cloth.
  • Do not immerse the device or use abrasive cleaners.
  • Let the cane dry before charging or storing it.
  • Store it away from extreme heat, cold and direct moisture.

Important safety notice

SmartCane does not detect every hazard and is not a replacement for a conventional white cane or professional orientation and mobility training. Stop using damaged equipment. If electronic features stop working, continue only with techniques and support appropriate to the situation.
